North America’s Last Chance Qualifier is over, and the final team going to the Major has been decided. The Soniqs booked themselves a ticket to Copenhagen, joining the likes of DarkZero, M80, and Spacestation Gaming. This victory comes after two hard fought matches against Oxygen and Beastcoast.
Beastcoast crusied through their match agaist West Garfield Park, going 14-1 in roundcount against the T2 squad. In contrast, Soniqs had a rough go of it against OXG, losing the first map 7-2 and having to battle back on their own map pick of Oregon 7-4 before winning the series on Clubhouse.
The Finals of LCQ were as exciting as one could ask for, sQ started hot on their map pick of Chalet, but Beastcoast started the rumblings of a comeback before being shut down. The young squad brought in back on a heavily contested Villa, evening the map count.
Theme Park was a closer affair than a 7-3 scoreline would suggest, with sQ’s experience shining through in clutch moments, earning them rounds that certainly should have gone to Beastcoast’s Attack. Beastcoast ran out of gas at the end, getting swiftly finished off once on the Defense.
The Soniqs go to Copenhagen as the final North American team. That said, they come in as the weakest NA represenative, not because of the way the qualified but the level of play they’ve shown through both the regular season and playoffs. This is a team that still has clear flaws and isn’t sure how to harness all the star power put together. Geo in the backlines makes sense given his expertise as a role player, but a young gun like Gunnar put on more supportive roles to make room for Rexen, Gryxr, and CTZN is evidence that the team is trying to make enough room for those top players. Regardless, this team has LAN proven players, so they may level up in the international competition.
SQ has 12 days to work out their issues, as they’ve successfully qualified to Phase 1 of the Copenhagen Major, starting on April 24th. Their first opponent is unknown.
